Brief history of car bombs

- First car bombing incident took place in New York in September 1920. An angry Italian anarchist Mario Buda exploded a horse drawn wagon filled with dynamite and iron scrap near New York's Wall Street, killing 40 people and injuring more than 200.
- In 1970,an American student took two of the most basic components of civilisation-fertiliser and a car-and created the modern car bomb.
- In the mordern asymetric war, car bombs were popularised in Beirut. In April 1983, a young man drove his car into the American embassy,killing 63 people. It was the first ever suicide car bomb attack against a 'western' target. Since then car bombs are used in the Palestinian theatre and of late with devastating effect in Iraq and Afganistan.
